Sydney Opera House
The world famous Sydney
Opera House is one of Australia’s most
distinguishing structures.
It is a
performing arts center located on Bennelong
Point in the Sydney Harbour in New South
Wales.
The building was the brainchild of Danish
architect Jon Utson. In 2003, he was awarded
the highest honor in architecture, the
Pritzker Prize, for his amazing work that
resulted to an icon so unique that it
continues to draw worldwide recognition. The
Sydney Opera House does not just represent
the city, it represents the entire
continent.
On June 28, 2007, the Sydney Opera House was
awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
It is among the top performing arts centers
in the entire world, and it is among the
most distinctive structures to ever grace
the skyline of any city in the 20th century.
The opera house lies on the north east end
of the central business district. On three
sides, it is flanked by the Sydney Cove and
Farm Cove Harbour. It is also beside the
Royal Botanic Gardens, which is also a
popular local and tourist attraction.
The main venues in the opera house are the
Concert Hall and the Opera Theater. Both are
housed under two large shells.
The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia, the
Sydney Symphony, the Sydney Theatre Company
and a number of other international
productions regularly perform in the Sydney
Opera House.
