Royal Exhibition Building
The Royal Exhibition
Building is in Melbourne, Australia, and is
right beside the Melbourne Museum.
The beautiful World Heritage
Site-listed building was built in 1880. It
sits in the charming Carlton Gardens, which
is located north east of the central
business district. The exhibition building
is the
largest and arguably the most
significant item from the collection of
Museum Victoria.
In 1880, the building hosted the Melbourne
International Exhibition, and in 1901, it
was where the first Parliament of Australia
opened. Several sections of the building
were demolished while other wings were
destroyed by fire during the 20th century.
Fortunately, the main building remains
intact.
The building continues to host several
exhibitions and events. Most of which are
closely tied with Melbourne Museum’s events
including the popular Melbourne
International Flower and Garden Show.
It is
also used by the Royal Melbourne Institute
of Technology, the University of Melbourne,
the Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson
Girls' High School as an exam hall.
The Royal Exhibition Building is among the
few remaining 19th century buildings across
the globe. During the 1990s, the building
underwent major restoration. In 2004, the
exhibition building, along with the Carlton
Gardens, was awarded UNESCO World Heritage
status making it the first building in all
of Australia to receive the honor.
