Parramatta River
The Parramatta or Parra, as
it is referred to by locals, is one of
Sydney, New South Wales’ suburbs.
It is located on the
Parramatta River bank, to the west of the
central business district.
Parramatta, being Australia’s largest
business district, is a major urban center
and it is Greater Western Sydney’s economic
capital. There are several high density
residential and commercial developments in
the area. One of the major establishments in
the commercial hub is the second largest
shopping center in the country: the
Westfield Parramatta.
Church Street in Parramatta is lined with
numerous restaurants and shops. The northern
portion
of the street near the
Lennox Bridge is home to a diverse
assortment of al fresco dining restaurants.
On the other hand, the south
end, known as Auto Alley, is home to a lot
of car dealerships.
At the Charles Street Weir, which separates
the sea water from the upper river, is the
Parramatta
ferry wharf. The wharf is
the Sydney Ferries River Cat’s westernmost
terminal for its Parramatta River ferry
services.
The river is Sydney Harbour’s main
tributary. It is one of Port Jackson’s
branches along with Duck and Lane Cove
Rivers. Apart from the Parramatta, the other
wharves on the river are Meadowbank, Kissing
Point, Cabarita Park, Abbotsford, Five Dock
and Gladesville.
