Federation Square
Federation Square or, as it
is called by locals, Fed Square is a very
popular and dynamic cultural hub
in Melbourne. It is the
city’s focal point for creative and cultural
activities. Fed Square is almost always
abuzz with cultural festivals, event
launches, book clubs, exhibitions, fashion
festivals, wine showcases, Guinness Book
record attempts, concerts, films and so much
more.
The square is made up of two major public
spaces surrounded by several buildings which
house art galleries, a public broadcaster,
cinemas, a museum, art galleries, auditoria,
exhibition spaces, bars, restaurants and
shops. One of the public spaces is the
covered Atrium. The other is comprised by
two linked spaces: St. Paul’s Court and The
Square.
In 2006, a major addition was made to Fed
Square in the form of the Federation Wharf.
The wharf extended the
square to the Yarra River through the
redevelopment of the vaults
beneath Prince Bridge into
ferry terminals and cafes equipped with
elevator access to the square.
Fed Square features unique museums and
galleries that are rich with Australian’s
cultural and artistic heritage. They include
National Gallery of Victoria, the Australian
Center for the Moving Image, the ACGA
Gallery, and the Champions Australian Racing
Museum and Hall of Fame.
